Overview

Chengde is a historic cultural city. The Mountain Resort, built 1703, was the Qing emperor's summer palace and seat of government, covering 5.64 million sqm — China's largest imperial garden. Eight Outer Temples are Tibetan Buddhist temples surrounding the resort, blending Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian architecture. Chengde also has unique Danxia landforms like 'Hammer Mountain'.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples, Chengde (1994) — UNESCO listed 1994. The Resort and Eight Temples symbolize Qing multi-ethnic unity, blending Han, Tibetan and Mongolian architectural art.
• Chengde Qingyin Music Assembly (2011) — Originating from Qing court music, performed with silk and bamboo instruments, elegant melodies, national intangible heritage since 2011.
