Overview

Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, historically called Jincheng, is the only provincial capital where the Yellow River flows through the city center. Zhongshan Bridge is the first iron bridge on the Yellow River, a century of history witnessing the city's transformation. The Yellow River Mother sculpture is Lanzhou's iconic landmark. Lanzhou beef ramen is nationally famous, its 'one clear, two white, three red, four green, five yellow' standard a culinary classic. The Gansu Provincial Museum houses the national treasure Bronze Galloping Horse. Waterwheel Park recreates ancient irrigation wisdom. Lanzhou is a key Silk Road node, the transport hub to Dunhuang and Zhangye.

Zhongshan Bridge

The first modern iron bridge on the Yellow River, built in 1909, known as the 'First Bridge on the Yellow River.' Now a pedestrian bridge and Lanzhou's landmark.

Gansu Provincial Museum

Gansu's largest museum. The Bronze Galloping Horse (Flying Horse of Gansu) is China's tourism symbol. Rich collections, Silk Road exhibition especially outstanding.

Yellow River Mother Sculpture

Created by sculptor He E, located on the south bank of the Yellow River. The mother holding a baby symbolizes the Yellow River nurturing the Chinese nation.

Baitashan (White Pagoda Hill) Park

On the north bank of the Yellow River, named for the White Pagoda at its summit. Climb the pagoda for panoramic views of Lanzhou and the Yellow River.

Waterwheel Park

Recreating Lanzhou's ancient waterwheel irrigation culture. Large replica waterwheels in the park. Lanzhou waterwheels were invented in Ming Dynasty by Duan Xu for Yellow River irrigation.

Yellow River Scenic Belt

A 40km riverside scenic belt along both banks of the Yellow River, connecting Zhongshan Bridge, Yellow River Mother and Waterwheel Park. Walk or cycle along it.

Lanzhou Beef Ramen

Lanzhou's most famous dish, with the standard of 'one clear (broth), two white (radish), three red (chili oil), four green (coriander), five yellow (noodles).' Savory broth, chewy noodles.

Hand-Grabbed Lamb

Traditional Lanzhou dish, premium Northwest Tan sheep simply seasoned and steamed. Dip in pepper salt. Tender, game-free, essential for entertaining guests.

Huidouzi (Sweet Bean Soup)

World & Intangible Heritage

• Lanzhou Taiping Drum Dance (2006) — Traditional Lanzhou drum dance with thunderous sound and majestic momentum, the city's most famous folk performance art. Designated as National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.
• Lanzhou Gourd Micro-Carving (2014) — Traditional Lanzhou micro-carving technique, engraving exquisite patterns on gourds with delicate craftsmanship. Designated as Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014.
