Leshan乐山

Overview

Leshan, anciently called Jiazhou, sits at the confluence of three rivers in southern Sichuan. The Leshan Giant Buddha at 71m is the world's largest stone Buddha statue, inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. The Buddha's head reaches the mountain top and feet touch the river — awe-inspiring. Leshan is also a food capital — sweet-skin duck, bobo chicken, qiaojiao beef, and tofu pudding draw food lovers from far and wide. Mount Emei and the Giant Buddha form a combined World Heritage. Luocheng Ancient Town's boat-shaped street is unique.

Leshan Giant Buddha

The world's largest seated stone Maitreya Buddha at 71m tall, 28m shoulder width, 8.5m foot width. 'The mountain is a Buddha, the Buddha is a mountain.' Descend via Jiuqu Plank Road or view by boat.

Oriental Buddha Park

A Buddhist cultural park connected to the Giant Buddha area, featuring large grotto sculptures and Lianxin Mountain. More Buddhist stone carving art to appreciate.

Jiazhou Green Heart Park

An ecological park in Leshan's center, called the 'City Green Heart'. 10km lakeside trail, flowers year-round. Popular for jogging and leisure.

Luocheng Ancient Town

Called 'China's Noah's Ark' for its boat-shaped main street lined with teahouses and opera stages. Sip tea and listen to opera as if time rewinds. One of Sichuan's best-preserved Ming-Qing ancient towns.

Zhanggongqiao Food Street

Leshan's most famous food street. Sweet-skin duck, bobo chicken, qiaojiao beef, tofu pudding — eat your way through Leshan in one street. Even livelier at night.

Sweet-Skin Duck

Leshan's food icon. Braised duck glazed with malt sugar syrup — crispy sweet skin, tender meat. Perfect sweet-savory balance. One is never enough.

Bobo Chicken (Cold Skewers in Chili Oil)

Various meats and vegetables on bamboo sticks, soaked in chili oil or green pepper broth. Served cold, spicy and aromatic. Charged by the stick. Leshan's hottest street food.

Qiaojiao Beef

A Sujie Town specialty. Beef bone broth with beef, offal, and Chinese herbs. Named for diners sitting with crossed legs. Now provincial intangible heritage.

Leshan Tofu Pudding

Different from Emei style, Leshan's tofu pudding features thick sweet potato starch gravy with crispy pork, glass noodles, and peanuts. Rich layered textures.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Mount Emei & Leshan Giant Buddha (1996) — Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996. The Leshan Giant Buddha is the world's largest stone Buddha, begun in 713 AD and completed after 90 years. Carved from Lingyun Mountain, 71m tall.
• Jiajiang New Year Pictures (2008) — One of China's four major New Year picture styles, painted on powder-coated paper with bold colors. National intangible heritage since 2008.
