Overview

Pingyao in central Shanxi is one of China's best-preserved ancient cities, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Founded in the Western Zhou Dynasty and expanded in the 3rd year of Hongwu (Ming Dynasty), it retains its complete Ming-Qing urban layout. Within its 2.25 sq km walled area, streets form a chessboard pattern with shops lining both sides. Rishengchang Draft Bank is the forefather of Chinese banking, pioneering draft exchange services. Pingyao County Magistrate's Office is China's most complete surviving ancient county government. Over 400 Ming-Qing residences are preserved within the ancient city walls, where strolling feels like traveling back centuries. Pingyao beef and wantuo are local specialties.

Pingyao Ancient City Wall

One of China's most complete ancient city walls, circumference about 6.2km, height about 12m. Walk or bike the perimeter for panoramic city views.

Rishengchang Draft Bank

China's first draft bank, known as the 'father of Chinese banking.' Founded by Lei Lutai in 1823, branches nationwide at its peak, pioneering remote remittance.

Ming-Qing Street (South Street)

The ancient city's central axis, about 700m long. Both sides feature well-preserved Ming-Qing shops and residences. Historic banks and shops line the street.

Pingyao County Magistrate's Office

China's most complete surviving ancient county government complex, founded in Yuan Dynasty. Office, court and residential areas, with regular mock court sessions.

Shuanglin Temple

Located about 6km southwest of the ancient city, famous for painted sculptures. Over 2,000 Ming Dynasty colored sculptures preserved, called the 'Treasure House of Eastern Sculpture Art.'

Food & Snacks

Pingyao Beef

Pingyao's most representative specialty. Premium beef cured and cooked until tender, reddish color and mellow flavor. 'Guanyun' is the famous brand.

Pingyao Wantuo (Bowl Jelly)

Traditional Pingyao snack, buckwheat batter steamed into bowl-shaped jelly, cut into strips with vinegar, garlic, chili and sesame sauce.

Kaolaolao (Oat Rolls)

Shanxi specialty, oat flour shaped into honeycomb cylinders and steamed, dipped in lamb-mushroom sauce. Chewy texture, a Pingyao classic.

Pingyao Yougao (Fried Cake)

Traditional Pingyao pastry, millet flour dough filled with brown sugar or bean paste, deep-fried golden and crispy. Crispy outside, sweet inside.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Ancient City of Pingyao (1997) — Listed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1997. Pingyao completely preserves Ming-Qing urban layout, an outstanding example of Han Chinese cities in that period, a living specimen for studying ancient Chinese cities.
• Pingyao Lacquerware Polishing Craft (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Pingyao lacquerware is named for hand-polishing technique. Complex process, mirror-bright finish, one of China's four great lacquerware styles with millennia of history.
• Pingyao Yarn Pavilion Opera Figures (2008) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2008. Yarn Pavilion Opera Figures are Pingyao's unique traditional craft, using rice straw, bamboo and colored paper to create vivid opera characters.
