Overview

Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning Province and the birthplace of two Qing Dynasty emperors. Shenyang Imperial Palace is one of only two remaining imperial palace complexes in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. North Tomb (Zhaoling) and East Tomb (Fuling) are grand mausoleums of the founding Qing emperors. Zhang's Mansion was the residence of General Zhang Xueliang. Shenyang was also China's industrial powerhouse, with Tiexi District once the country's largest industrial zone. Today, Shenyang blends rich history with modern vitality. Local foods like chicken frames and Laobian dumplings are unforgettable.

Shenyang Huitou (Turnover Pastry)

Traditional Shenyang snack. Shaped like dumplings but with folded ends. Pan-fried golden-brown with crispy skin and savory filling. Beef filling is the classic.

White Pork with Blood Sausage

Traditional Manchu dish. White pork slices are rich but not greasy, blood sausage is tender and delicious. Served with garlic dip, a winter warmer in Shenyang.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Shenyang Imperial Palace (2004) — Listed as a World Heritage Site in 2004 as an extension of the Beijing Imperial Palace. The pre-1644 Qing palace, blending Manchu, Han, Mongol, and Tibetan styles.
• Qing Tombs (Zhaoling, Fuling, Yongling) (2004) — Listed as a World Heritage Site in 2004. Three Qing imperial tombs in Shenyang and surrounding areas are outstanding examples of Qing mausoleum architecture.
• Northeast Drum Singing (2008) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2008. Northeast Drum Singing is a traditional performing art popular in Northeast China, accompanied by drum and clapper, with bold singing styles and vivid performances.
• Tan Zhenshan Folk Tales (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Tan Zhenshan is a famous Liaoning folk tale teller who can recount over 600 stories covering myths, legends and life stories.
• Pingju Opera (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Pingju Opera is one of China's five major opera forms, widely popular in Northeast China. Shenyang is an important base for Pingju development, producing famous artists like Han Shaoyun and Hua Shulan.
