Overview

Xining, capital of Qinghai Province at 2,275m altitude, is the largest city on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and a transport hub to Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake and Dunhuang. Ta'er Monastery is one of the six great monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism's Gelugpa sect, birthplace of Je Tsongkhapa, famous for butter sculptures, murals and applique. Dongguan Grand Mosque is one of Northwest China's four great mosques. Xining is home to Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu and other ethnic groups, with Halal food and Tibetan teahouses coexisting on the streets. Its cool summer climate earns it the title 'Summer Capital of China.'

Food & Snacks

Qinghai Niangpi (Cold Noodle Sheet)

Xining's most representative snack. Steamed flour sheet (washed to remove starch), cut into strips with vinegar, chili oil, sesame paste and mustard. Chewy and refreshing.

Hand-Grabbed Lamb

Qinghai's most distinctive dish, premium plateau lamb boiled in plain water, eaten by hand with pepper salt or garlic sauce. Tender and game-free.

Qinghai Yogurt

Qinghai specialty yogurt made from yak or fresh milk, yellow cream on top. Thick, sour and sweet, a natural dessert for cooling and refreshing.

Tianpei (Sweet Fermented Barley)

Traditional Qinghai fermented drink made from highland barley or oats. Sweet with mild wine aroma, cool and thirst-quenching, popular in summer.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Ta'er Monastery Butter Sculpture (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Butter sculpture is one of Ta'er Monastery's 'Three Wonders,' shaping Buddha statues, figures and flowers from butter with brilliant colors and exquisite craftsmanship, exhibited annually on the 15th of the 1st lunar month.
• Regong Arts (2009) — Inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Heritage in 2009. Regong Arts are Tibetan Buddhist arts from Tongren, Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, represented by thangka, murals and applique, with rich colors and exquisite detail.
• Jiaya Tibetan Carpet Weaving (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Jiaya Tibetan carpet is a traditional handcraft from Jiaya Village, Huangzhong District, Xining, using wool and hand-weaving to create thick, beautifully patterned carpets of both practical and artistic value.
