Overview

Located in the central Ningxia Plain with the Helan Mountains to the west and the Yellow River to the east, Yinchuan is the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. This ancient city was once the capital of the Western Xia Dynasty, leaving precious relics including the Western Xia Imperial Tombs and Chengtian Temple Pagoda. Thanks to Yellow River irrigation, the Yinchuan Plain is fertile and abundant, earning the reputation of 'Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall.' As China's most concentrated Hui population city, Yinchuan features distinctive halal cuisine, Islamic architecture, and Hui folk culture.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Great Wall (Ningxia Section) (1987) — Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The Great Wall in Ningxia stretches over 1,500 km across multiple dynasties including Warring States, Qin, Han and Ming, known as the 'Museum of the Great Wall of China,' with the Ming Great Wall best preserved.
• Hui Mountain Folk Songs (Hua'er) (2006) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2006. Mountain folk songs (Hua'er) are Hui folk singing art popular in Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai and beyond, with soaring melodies and improvised lyrics expressing love for life and nature.
• Helan Inkstone Craftsmanship (2008) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2008. Helan inkstones are made from Helan Mountain stone with fine texture and even ink grinding. The craft includes quarrying, material selection, carving and polishing — an outstanding representative of Ningxia's traditional crafts.
• Yang Family Clay Sculpture (2008) — Listed as National Intangible Heritage in 2008. Yang Family clay sculpture is a traditional art form from Yinchuan, using clay to hand-shape various human and animal figures with vivid forms and bright colors, passed down through generations.
