Overview

Zhongshan, formerly Xiangshan ('Fragrant Mountain'), was renamed in 1925 to honor Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The Sun Yat-sen Residence Memorial Museum in Cuiheng Village is key to understanding China's modern revolution. Zhongshan is China's Lighting Capital — Guzhen Town produces lighting sold worldwide. Sunwen West Road Pedestrian Street along the Qi River preserves Nanyang arcade architecture. Traditional Lingnan water town life thrives in Minzhong and Nanlang towns. Zhongshan is also the birthplace of the Zhongshan suit, symbol of modern Chinese dress. Crispy grass carp and Shiqi pigeon are must-try local delicacies.

World & Intangible Heritage

• Zhongshan Drunken Dragon Dance (2008) — Traditional folk dance from Changzhou Village, dancers appear tipsy while performing, humorous and entertaining, national intangible heritage since 2008.
• Xiaolan Chrysanthemum Fair (2006) — Xiaolan Town hosts the grand Jiashu Chrysanthemum Fair every 60 years, China's largest chrysanthemum event, national intangible heritage since 2006.
